Antonya Raymond

Antonya has been dancing since the age of 4 and is experienced in a wide range of dance styles, from Ballet, Jazz, Hip-Hop, Contemporary, Latin, to Dancehall. A former choreographer in Edmonton she created performances that ran frequently across the city. Her cultural roots are from Trinidad and Tobago also impacted her design of movement and flow in her choreography which vary in genres such as Soca, Parang, Calypso and Chutney. Her background training helps her mix and create a stellar Zumba® Fitness class.

A certified Zumba Instructor since 2012, she has been asked to take part in many events such as the “Bust A Moves Event”, a breast cancer fundraiser organized by BC Cancer Foundation, Zumba Parties held by ZumbaVancouver®, and the World Dance Festival by Groupo America Dance Co. She teaches all over Vancouver and Burnaby holding Zumba classes in both studios for all ages and at schools for kids and teenagers during their Physical Education classes.

FUN FACTS

Did you know, because I am left handed, I always begin teaching with my left hand or foot. However, many students may not notice the difference because I am your mirror image when in front of you during class.

Social Dancing and letting others lead me lol. 

What would be a tip/advice you would give to a beginner?

Be you, not anyone else when you dance, and try not to look at your feet, look in the mirror at that beautiful face. 

One thing you learned through dancing that can also be applied to other aspects of life.

Life is the dancer, and you are the dance.

What's your dance background?

Classical styles (ballet, jazz, hip-hop). Became a choreographer at 16. Picked up and got mentored in Latin-styles at 16. Learned about Zumba & Fitness at 18. Here I am today.

What gets you inspired?

Getting people connected to their soul through movement and music.

How long have you been dancing for?

20 years.

What do you do for a living?

Teach dance and Coach in Holistic Nutrition.
